It is hard to believe it is already November! Thank you for taking the time to attend Student-Led Conferences.
Reading minutes have increased to 70 required minutes per week. Please make sure you are writing these minutes in your child's agenda. In order to make the gains in reading by the end of the year, it takes continual practice on a weekly basis at home.
Next week we will be finishing Unit 2 in math. We will be taking the summative on Thursday. Your child will be bringing home the post-formative on Monday, which we will correct in class and use this as a study guide. The summative will look very similar to the post-formative. You could also help your child practice at home using different numbers. One area of weakness which we are working on in class is to explain their thinking while solving a problem. We need more details than "I counted" or "I just knew." We are looking for specific details explaining how they knew to add/subtract/multiply/divide and which numbers to use. We will take a pre-formative on Friday to go along with unit 3, measurement and data to find the area of a shape.
A book order is being sent home today. If you plan to order, please return the order form and a check by Friday, November 15th. If you place your order online, our class will receive a free book!
Next Friday, November 8th is our Veteran's Day assembly. If you have a Veteran in your family who will be attending, please call the school office to RSVP.
Next Friday, November 8th is also our Fall Party. Information was emailed to parents this week. All parents are invited to attend and our party will be from 2-3:30.
We have begun a Reading and Writing Unit on Nonfiction. This unit can offer kids who had a hard time becoming enthralled with fiction a new entrance ramp into reading. Research has shown that there are some youngsters who are much more apt to love reading if they are able to pore over the sports pages of the newspaper or devour magazine articles about skateboarding or global warming than if they are reading tales of quest and struggle. This unit, then, provides a new beginning for youngsters who need that. Lots of nonfiction texts have enticing pictures that lure kids to think the books are easier than they actually are. Of course, nonfiction texts always teach readers some new vocabulary as well as some new concepts, so we’ll also help them have a toolkit of skills for tackling the tricky words they do encounter. In Writing, we have started our "Wonder" unit with hands-on discovery projects as well as researching our topics of interest.
Please don't forget, there is NO SCHOOL on Tuesday, November 5th.
Please place the third grade music program on your calendar for Tuesday, November 19th. More information about the event will be available in the coming weeks.
